Consultant Orthopaedic Hand Surgeon
Medical Director - Manchester Institute of Health and Performance

Mike is on the Specialist Register as an Orthopaedic Consultant, and his clinical practice is exclusively surgery of the Hand and Wrist. 

In addition he is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Human Bone cell research group at the University of Liverpool and also at the University of Salford.

His NHS base is at Wrightington Hospital.

He consults privately at the new Spire Manchester Hospital (M20 2AF), the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle, The HCA Wilmslow Hospital and on the private wing at his NHS base Wrightington Hospital.

Over the last few years Mike has developed a special interest is sports medicine and is the hand surgeon to many professional sports teams and national sporting bodies. He has been awarded the status of a Founding Fellow in the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (FFSEM UK ) and has been an examiner for the Faculty.

Mike has recently been appointed as the Medical Director of the Manchester Institute of Health and Performance due to open in December 2015. For CMA compliance this is paid role through HCA healthcare the facility operator.

Over the past 5 years Mike has received payments as a speaker and also as a clinical advisor from the following companies :

  • Pfizer

Mike is a keen teacher and regularly lectures in the UK and Europe and North America. He has been invited to give lectures at the American Society of Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and American Association of Hand Surgery (AAHS) for the last 5 years, including regular program chairmanship  of hand and wrist sports injuries symposia.

He has given two keynote lectures at the AAHS, namely, the "Danyo Lecture" in 2011 and more recently the prestigious "Presidential Invited Lecture" in 2015.  

His research is regularly published in European and American Literature. Mike is an examiner for the Intercollegiate Board of Examinations for the FRCS(Trauma and Orthopaedics) .

His specialist training originated in Liverpool (4 years), a Whiston Hospital Plastic Surgery Hand Fellowship (6months), a Wrightington Hospital Fellowship (2 years) and as a visiting Resident to the Mayo clinic in Rochester, USA (3months)

He is a member of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand ( BSSH) and was accepted as an International Member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) in 2014.

Mike is married with three children. His hobbies are centered on sport and played rugby union at the highest National league, ultimately Captaining the English Universities Team.

A serious neck injury which brought his contact sports career to a rapid halt and now plays golf (badly) and generally keeps fit with a variety of sports.
